Abstract
ABSTRACT The study was conducted to address students’ difficulties in developing speaking skills, such as low confidence, limited vocabulary, and fear of making mistakes. As a popular platform among adolescents, TikTok provides interactive features that may create a more enjoyable, creative, and less intimidating environment for practicing English This research investigates students’ perceptions of utilizing the TikTok application as an educational medium to enhance their speaking ability at SMPN 2 Marga Sekampung. This study employed a qualitative research design, utilizing interviews and classroom observations as the primary methods of data collection. Conducted in Grade 8B of SMPN 2 Marga Sekampung with a sample of 11 students, the research explored how learners perceived the use of the TikTok application as an educational medium for improving their speaking skills. The data were analyzed using Solso’s Theory of Perception to identify and interpret students’ positive and negative responses, revealing how their cognitive processes shaped their attitudes toward the learning media. In addition, Brown’s components of speaking fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, and comprehension were used to evaluate students’ speaking development throughout the implementation of TikTok-based activities. Through this combined analytical approach, the study provided a comprehensive understanding of how students’ perceptions influenced their speaking performance and how TikTok contributed to their learning experiences. The findings show that students with positive perceptions viewed TikTok as engaging and supportive, benefiting from features that allowed repeated practice, creativity, and collaboration, which helped improve their fluency, vocabulary, and pronunciation. In contrast, students with negative perceptions struggled with low confidence, fear of judgment, and limited digital readiness, which hindered their speaking performance. Overall, the study concludes that TikTok has strong potential as an educational tool, but its effectiveness depends on students’ perceptions and the classroom environment. A supportive atmosphere is essential to reduce anxietyiii and build confidence, while teachers must integrate TikTok strategically, provide constructive feedback, and ensure its use aligns with learning goals and maintains students’ motivation and comfort.
