Abstract

ABSTRACT Speaking is a crucial skill in English. However, students encounter numerous challenges and difficulties, one of which stems from grammatical errors. Comparative taxonomy categorized grammatical errors into four groups: developmental errors, interlingual errors, ambiguous errors, and other errors. This study tried to find the grammatical errors made by the eleventh-grade students at MAN 1 Bandar Lampung. This study used a purposive sampling technique to select 34 students from the eleventh-grade MIA 2 MAN 1 Bandar Lampung. This study employed a qualitative approach and a documentationbased data collection technique. Grammatical errors are analyzed and categorized based on comparative taxonomy through the data analysis procedure: identifying errors, analyzing student errors, explaining student errors, and evaluating errors. The results of this study indicated that grammatical errors in speaking made by eleventh-grade students of MAN 1 Bandar Lampung were based on comparative taxonomy, with four errors accounting for 59 data points. The study identified four types of errors: developmental (52 data, 88.13% error), interlingual (five data, 8.47% error), ambiguous (zero data, 0% error), and other (up to two data, 3.38% error). The data analysis results show that most students commit developmental errors, indicating a lack of knowledge in their second language. They were unable to apply the established English rules because their knowledge was still limited.
