Abstract

ABSTRACT The development of the modern cosmetics industry has raised issues regarding the halal status of raw materials used, particularly those derived from animals. One ingredient that has sparked debate is lanolin (adeps lanae), a fat extracted from sheep's wool and widely used in cosmetic products. Problems arise when lanolin is obtained from sheep whose slaughtering methods are unclear. This raises doubts among Muslim consumers about the sanctity and halal status of cosmetic products and the validity of their sale and purchase practices. This study aims to analyze the halal status of lanolin from unslaughtered sheep from the perspective of Islamic scholars, examine the validity of the sale and purchase of cosmetics containing lanolin based on the pillars and conditions of sale and purchase, and evaluate its compliance with halal regulations in Indonesia. This study uses qualitative methods with a library research approach and comparative analysis to examine the opinions of Islamic scholars and halal regulations in Indonesia. The data collection technique was carried out through a documentation method, namely searching for fiqh books, fatwas of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), scientific journals, the Halal Product Guarantee Law, and other relevant academic literature regarding the law of lanolin. The results of the study indicate that the majority of scholars from various schools of thought are of the opinion that lanolin is a pure substance and is permissible to use, because it comes from the wool of sheep which is not considered a carcass, and has undergone a transformation process (istihaalah) to become halal and pure because it is changed into another form. This view is supported by a fatwa from the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) which states that lanolin from halal animals but not slaughtered can be used for non-food products such as cosmetics. According to Islamic law, the sale and purchase of cosmetics containing lanolin is declared valid and halal, as long as it fulfills the pillars and conditions of sale and purchase, namely the presence of a rational and willing seller and buyer, a halal and beneficial object, and a transaction free from elements of usury, gharar, and fraud.
