Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims to analyze the quantity, types, and composition of microplastics found in sediments at Sebalang Beach and Tanjung Selaki Beach, South Lampung. Sampling was conducted using a purposive sampling method with three stations at each beach and three replications, A total of 54 sediment samples were analyzed using a stereo microscope to identify the shape, color, and size of microplastics, and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) to determine polymer types. The results showed that Sebalang Beach contained 248 microplastic particles dominated by fragments (45%), fibers (35%), and films (20%), while Tanjung Selaki Beach contained 187 particles dominated by fibers (40%), fragments (38%), and films (22%). Most microplastics were <1 mm in size, indicating an advanced degradation process. The polymers identified through FTIR were Polyethylene (PE), Polypropylene (PP), and Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET), with PE being the dominant polymer at both sites. Differences in microplastic abundance and type between the two beaches were influenced by human activities such as fisheries, shipping, and tourism. These findings indicate that Sebalang Beach has a higher level of microplastic contamination than Tanjung Selaki Beach. Therefore, sustainable plastic waste management is necessary to reduce marine pollution in the coastal area of South Lampung. Keywords: Microplastic, Sediment, Sebalang Beach, Tanjung Selaki Beach.
