Abstract

ABSTRACT This research aims to find out the influence of using the Mind Your Grammar board game on students' grammar mastery, especially focusing on the simple present tense material. The research was motivated by the observation that some students at MTs Negeri 1 Pesawaran still have struggle with grammar mastery, especially the simple present tense, as evidenced by low scores and lack of interest in learning using conventional methods. This research utilized a quasi experimental design. The population of this research was students of eight grade of MTs Negeri 1 Pesawaran in the academic year 2025/2026. The researcher retrieved the sample by using purposive sampling technique and determined that VIII A as the experimental class that used the Mind Your Grammar board game as a learning media, and VIII B as the control class using conventional learning methods, which combined totaled 74 students. The researcher used pre-test and post-test to determine students' mastery of the simple present tense before and after treatment. The data were analyzed by the researcher using the Independent Sample Test. The results of the hypothesis testing showed that the Sig. (2- tailed) value of the t-test was 0.005, which was lower than the significance level of α = 0.05. This indicates that Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected. Therefore, it can be concluded that there was a significant influence of using the Mind Your Grammar board game on students’ grammar mastery. During the implementation of the research, several challenges were encountered, such as some students being overly active, which made classroom management more difficult, and the game requiring more time than initially planned due to in-depth discussions among groups. The novelty of this research lies in the specific use of the Mind Your Grammar board game as a learning medium for teaching the simple present tense to eighth-grade students at MTs in Pesawaran.
