Abstract

ABSTRACT At SMPN 12 Bandar Lampung, the teaching and learning process of vocabulary at the junior high school level is still considered ineffective. This occurs because teachers often rely on traditional media such as textbooks and PowerPoint presentations, which ultimately make students easily bored and less enthusiastic about learning. This study aims to examine whether the use of Instagram Reels can have a positive impact on students' ability to master vocabulary. This study employs a quasi-experimental method. The subjects were eighth-grade students at SMPN 12 Bandar Lampung during the 2025/2026 academic year. The researcher selected two classes as samples: class 8A with 20 students as the experimental class, and class 8C with 19 students as the control class. The experimental class learned using Instagram Reels combined with the Think-Pair-Share (TPS) technique, while the control class only used images combined with the Think-Pair-Share (TPS) technique. The researchers collected data through multiple-choice vocabulary tests, namely pre-tests and posttests that had been conducted. Based on the findings, it appears that students' vocabulary scores have increased significantly between before and after the intervention. The average score of the experimental class rose from 57.5 to 82.5, while the control class only increased from 62.5 to 72.5. Using the NGain test, the experimental class score reached 0.6685, which is in the moderate category, while the control class only scored 0.3477, which is classified as low. When researchers conducted a hypothesis test using an independent samples t-test, the results showed a Sig. value (2-tailed) of 0.000, which was less than 0.05. This means that there was a significant difference between the two groups of students. Overall, the use of Instagram Reels in vocabulary learning proved to be effective in improving students' vocabulary mastery.
