Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aimed to develop and evaluate the feasibility of educational comics as a vocabulary learning tool for junior high school EFL students. The development was driven by identified challenges in students’ vocabulary acquisition, specifically low retention and the lack of engaging instructional resources. The primary focus of this research was to provide a pedagogically sound and visually supported medium presenting vocabulary within meaningful daily life and environmental contexts. The research followed a Research and Development (R&D) design using the ADDIE model, consisting of Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The subjects were 32 eighth-grade students at SMPN 5 Bandar Lampung. Data were collected through a triangulated approach involving teacher interviews, textbook analysis, expert validation sheets, student questionnaires, and observation sheets. The instruments were validated for content and reliability, with the student questionnaire achieving a Cronbach’s Alpha of 0.884. The findings from the Design Stage showed that the Media attained a mean score of 4.67 (Very Valid), the Content reached 4.40 (Very Valid), and the Language obtained 3.87 (Valid). Further validation using Aiken’s V formula confirmed high validity for the final product, with indices of 0.82 for Media, 0.87 for Material, and 0.82 for Practicality. During the Implementation Stage, 90% of expected positive student behaviors were observed, and students provided highly positive feedback with scores ranging from 3.86 to 4.54, indicating highly positive perceptions. In conclusion, the developed educational comics are valid, practical, and feasible instructional medium for supporting vocabulary learning junior high school EFL contexts.
