Abstract

ABSTRACT Mastering vocabulary plays a crucial role in developing English language skills, especially for EFL learners at the secondary school level. However, traditional learning methods often make students feel unmotivated and struggle to remember new vocabulary. The rapid development of technology has introduced mobile learning applications such as WordUp, which are expected to support more interactive and enjoyable learning. This research aimed to explore EFL students’ perceptions of using the WordUp application to support vocabulary mastery at the tenth grade of SMAN 7 Bandar Lampung. This study applied a descriptive qualitative method involving 30 students from class X.6 who were selected as participants. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and open-ended questionnaires. The data were analyzed using techniques of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings revealed that students had mostly positive perceptions of WordUp. They considered the application interesting, easy to use, and effective in improving vocabulary understanding and retention. Features such as spaced repetition, contextual examples, pronunciation practice, and gamified learning increased students’ motivation and made learning more enjoyable. Although some obstacles were reported such as unstable internet access and confusion in the level system these did not significantly hinder their learning experience. In conclusion, WordUp contributes positively to students’ vocabulary development by promoting motivation, independent learning, and better word comprehension. Therefore, integrating mobile applications like WordUp can be a beneficial solution to support English vocabulary learning in schools.
