Abstract

ABSTRACT Plastics that accumulate in the environment over a long period can fragment into small particles known as microplastics. The unmanaged accumulation of microplastics can cause serious impacts, such as health problems in living organisms and ecosystem damage. One sustainable solution currently being developed is the utilization of bacteria from the gut of the mealworm (Tenebrio molitor) for plastic biodegradation. This study aims to identify the microorganisms involved in the plastic degradation process by mealworms after being fed with different types of plastic: Polystyrene (PS), Polyethylene (PE), and Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET), as well as to determine the degradation rate for each treatment. Bacterial isolation was carried out from the digestive tract of mealworms that were fed plastic for 30 days, using Mineral Salts Medium (MSM) as a selective medium, followed by plastic degradation tests on the grown bacteria. The microbial species involved were identified using the VITEK-2 Compact System. The results showed that bacteria isolated from the gut of the mealworms have significant potential to degrade plastics. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was found in the PS and PE treatments with degradation rates of 14.4% and 44.4%, respectively, while Aeromonas salmonicida was identified in the PET treatment with a degradation rate of 16.3%.
