Abstract

ABSTRACT Students tend to lose focus after a short period, particularly in lessons without engaging opening activities. it is essential for teachers to implement innovative strategies such ice-breaker that can increase students’ motivation, reduce nervous, and create a more supportive learning atmosphere. Teachers employ game-type ice-breakers during the teaching and learning process to make lessons more engaging, alleviate boredom, and encourage active participation among students. The aim of this research is explore students’ perceptions of the use of ice breaker activities in the English teaching and learning process at the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 30 Bandar Lampung. This study employs a qualitative research approach. The research was conducted through interviews with the English teacher and students of Class VIII at SMP Negeri 30 Bandar Lampung. This approach is chosen to obtain in-depth insights from both the teacher’s and students’ perspectives regarding the use of ice breaker activities in the teaching and learning process. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that students’ perceptions of the use of ice breaker activities in English teaching and learning at the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 30 Bandar Lampung are highly positive. Ice breakers, especially game-based ones, were found to reduce anxiety, increase motivation, and foster active participation in the classroom. Students experienced a more enjoyable, interactive, and supportive learning environment, which encouraged them to communicate in English with greater confidence and without fear of making mistakes. Furthermore, students also gained additional benefits such as vocabulary enrichment, teamwork, and improved self confidence. These results highlight that the integration of ice breaker activities plays a significant role in creating a positive classroom climate while supporting the achievement of English learning objectives.
