Abstract

Kata Kunci: ‘iqāb, Semantik, Toshihiko Izutsu, Al-Qur'an, Siksaan. ABSTRACT Discussions of 'iqāb, particularly those found in the Qur'an, are often found concerning rewards and punishments, as well as the consequences of an action. 'iqāb is sometimes temporary, occurring in this world, and sometimes eternal, occurring in the afterlife as a logical consequence of an action. Therefore, this study aims to examine the meaning of the word 'iqāb, which is frequently described in the verses of the Qur'an, focusing on the semantics of one figure, Toshihiko Izutsu. The problem formulation in this study includes How is the basic and relational meaning of the word 'iqāb when studied using Toshihiko Izutsu's semantic method, What are the synchronic and diachronic aspects of the word 'iqāb in the Qur'an, and What is the Weltanschauung of the word 'iqāb in the Qur'an. The purpose of this study is to comprehensively describe the historical and contextual meaning of 'iqāb, and analyze its relationship with related terms. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with the Izutsu semantic analysis approach, where primary data in the form of verses of the Qur'an containing the word 'iqāb and its derivations are analyzed based on the field of meaning and lexical relations. The results of the study show that the semantic analysis of the word ‘iqāb using Toshihiko Izutsu’s theory, the word ‘iqāb in the Qur'an has a deep meaning and is closely connected to various concepts of divine justice. Diachronically, ‘iqāb evolved from a general pre-Quranic meaning of the consequences that follow or hardship to a specific meaning in the Qur'an as divine punishment which is a reward for sins and violations. Meanwhile, synchronically, ‘iqāb predominantly means torture, and it is always syntagmatically related to triggers in the form of evil deeds such as lying, injustice, or disbelief. This is reinforced by the sentences ‘aqibat al-mufsidin, ‘aqibat az-zhalimin, ‘aqibat al-mukazzibin, and ‘aqibat al-mujrimin, which consistently show that ‘iqāb is a bad outcome of deviant behavior. Meanwhile, diachronically, the strengthening of the meaning of 'iqāb in the post-Qur'anic interpretation tradition shows that the interpreters understand 'iqāb as a form of divine justice that is not only of the afterlife, but can also be realized in the dynamics of worldly life. In the Qur'anic worldview, iqāb is not merely a punishment, but a representation of the universal principle of divine justice: anyone who transgresses, rejects the truth, or harms the common good will face certain consequences commensurate with their transgression, both in this world and the hereafter.
