Abstract

ABSTRACT Reading comprehension plays an essential role in English language learning because it allows students to access information, understand ideas, and develop critical thinking skills. However, many students still struggle to comprehend English texts due to linguistic limitations, lack of motivation, and insufficient reading strategies. This research aims to analyze the challenges faced by students in learning reading comprehension in the English Program at Al-Furqon Boarding School, Tulang Bawang Barat. This research used a qualitative method with a case study approach. The instruments of the research were observation and interviews. The data were analyzed through the model proposed by Miles and Huberman, which consists of three steps: data condensation, data display, and drawing and verifying conclusions. The research findings show that students encountered several challenges in learning reading comprehension, including limited vocabulary knowledge, lack of understanding of sentence structures, low reading fluency, ineffective reading strategies, and low motivation or environmental support. These challenges were influenced by both internal and external factors such as insufficient linguistic input, lack of confidence, and limited exposure to English reading materials. The study concludes that improving reading comprehension requires integrated support from teachers, appropriate learning strategies, and a more engaging reading environment, especially in the boarding school context.
