Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims to explore the role of group work in enhancing ninth-grade students’ English speaking skills at MTs Bani Salim. The research was conducted to address common problems encountered by students in speaking English, such as low self-confidence, limited vocabulary, fear of making mistakes, and insufficient opportunities to practice speaking in the classroom. In addition, the dominance of a teacher-centered learning approach contributed to minimal student interaction and low motivation to speak English. These conditions made students passive and reluctant to participate in speaking activities. Therefore, group work was implemented as an instructional strategy to provide students with more opportunities for interaction, encourage active participation, and create a supportive learning environment that promotes confidence and communicative competence. This research employed a descriptive qualitative design. The participants consisted of one English teacher and twenty-five ninthgrade students at MTs Bani Salim. Data were collected through interviews, classroom observations, and documentation to obtain indepth information regarding the implementation of group work in speaking activities. The data analysis process involved data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. To ensure the trustworthiness and credibility of the data, triangulation of sources and techniques was applied throughout the research process. The findings revealed that the teacher played a significant role in planning, guiding, and facilitating group work activities. Clear instructions, continuous monitoring, and supportive feedback encouraged students to participate more actively in speaking tasks. Group work created a comfortable and interactive learning atmosphere, enabling students, especially shy and low-confidence learners, to express their ideas more freely. As a result, students showed improvement in speaking fluency, interaction, confidence, and overall communicative competence. In conclusion, group work is an effective strategy for enhancing students’ English speaking skills, and the teacher’s role as facilitator and motivator is essential for successful implementation.
