Abstract

ABSTRACT This study examines gender bias in the interpretation of Islamic inheritance verses, particularly QS. An-Nisā‘ verse 11, where classical exegesis shaped within a patriarchlm. social context often positions women subordinately through the 2:1 inheritance rule. Social changes require a re-reading of this verse to ensure its alignment with the principles of justice and the ethical objectives of the Qur‘an. Based on this background, the study addresses the interpretive concepts of al-Zamakhsharī and Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd, compares their methodological similarities and differences in relating text, context, and legal meaning, and explores the implications of their reinterpretations for gender justice and the strengthening of women‘s rights. This research aims to analyze the interpretive concepts of al-Zamakhsharī and Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd regarding QS. An-Nisā‘ verse 11, to conduct a comparative examination of their methodological approaches, and to explain the implications of reinterpretation within modern social contexts. The study employs a qualitative library-based method with comparative analysis of the main exegetical works of both scholars using linguistic and hermeneutical approaches. The findings indicate that al-Zamakhsharī interprets the 2:1 inheritance rule as a final normative law based on linguistic analysis and the social structure at the time of revelation, whereas Abu Zayd understands it as a contextual provision shaped by historical realities. This methodological contrast reflects a stable relation between text and legal meaning in the linguistic approach and a dynamic one in the hermeneutical approach. The implications of these reinterpretations open space for developing a more gender-responsive understanding of Islamic inheritance law while remaining faithful to the fundamental values of the Qur‘an.
