Abstract

ABSTRACT This study discusses the dynamics of coffee trade in Lampung during the period 1910–1929, with a primary focus on the shift in the type of coffee cultivated, from Arabica to Robusta. This change was not only related to agronomic factors, but also closely connected to the social, economic, and political aspects of Dutch colonial rule. Arabica coffee, previously the main commodity, experienced a decline in productivity due to pest and disease attacks, and its limited ability to adapt to the climatic and soil conditions in Lampung. As a solution, the Dutch colonial government introduced Robusta coffee, which was more resistant to diseases, easier to cultivate, and had higher productivity. The research method used in this study is the historical method, involving the stages of heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The primary sources of this research were obtained from colonial archives, trade reports, and secondary literature in the form of academic studies related to agriculture and coffee trade in the Dutch East Indies. The findings of this study show that the shift to Robusta coffee brought significant impacts on the dynamics of coffee trade in Lampung. First, from an economic perspective, the production of Robusta coffee increased rapidly, and Lampung developed into one of the important coffee-producing areas in the Dutch East Indies. Second, from a social perspective, the introduction of Robusta coffee encouraged the colonial government’s transmigration program, bringing Javanese settlers to Lampung to meet labor demands in the plantation sector. Third, in terms of trade, Lampung’s Robusta coffee became a stable export commodity, although its price was relatively lower compared to Arabica coffee in the international market. Keywords: Dynamics, Coffee trade, Arabica, Robusta, Lampung, 1910–1929. ii ABSTRAK Penelitian ini membahas dinamika perdagangan kopi di Lampung pada periode 1910–1929, dengan fokus utama pada perubahan jenis kopi yang ditanam, yaitu dari kopi Arabika menjadi kopi Robusta. Perubahan ini tidak hanya berkaitan dengan faktor agronomis, tetapi juga erat hubungannya dengan aspek sosial, ekonomi, dan politik kolonial Belanda. Kopi Arabika dan yang sebelumnya menjadi komoditas utama mengalami penurunan produktivitas akibat serangan hama dan penyakit, serta kurang mampu beradaptasi dengan kondisi iklim dan tanah di Lampung. Sebagai solusi, pemerintah kolonial Belanda memperkenalkan kopi Robusta yang lebih tahan terhadap penyakit, mudah dibudidayakan, serta memiliki produktivitas lebih tinggi. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode sejarah dengan tahapan heuristik, kritik, interpretasi, dan historiografi. Sumber utama penelitian diperoleh dari arsip kolonial, laporan perdagangan, serta literatur sekunder berupa kajian akademik terkait pertanian dan perdagangan kopi di Hindia Belanda. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa perubahan jenis kopi ke Robusta membawa dampak signifikan terhadap dinamika perdagangan kopi di Lampung. Pertama, dari segi ekonomi, produksi kopi Robusta meningkat pesat dan Lampung berkembang menjadi salah satu daerah penghasil kopi penting di Hindia Belanda. Kedua, dari segi sosial, masuknya kopi Robusta turut mendorong program kolonisasi penduduk dari Jawa ke Lampung untuk memenuhi kebutuhan tenaga kerja di sektor perkebunan. Ketiga, dari segi perdagangan, kopi Robusta Lampung menjadi komoditas ekspor yang stabil meskipun harganya relatif lebih rendah dibandingkan kopi Arabika di pasar internasional.
