Abstract
ABSTRACT This study aims to explore students' perceptions of the challenges they experience in speaking English fluently in a formal academic context, particularly when presenting seminar proposals in the English Education Study Program at UIN Raden Intan Lampung. Speaking ability is an important skill in academic communication. However, in practice, many students still experience difficulties in conveying ideas and answering questions in English in formal academic forums. Therefore, understanding students' perceptions is an important part of identifying factors that can hinder fluency in speaking. This study used a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design to explore the subjective experiences of students. The research participants consisted of eight English Education students who had attended a proposal seminar. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews and observations during the presentation process and question and answer sessions. Data analysis was conducted using Miles and Huberman's interactive model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. Data validity was maintained through source triangulation. The results showed that students still faced challenges in psychological, linguistic, and learning environment aspects. Psychologically, students felt nervous, anxious, and afraid of making mistakes or receiving negative assessments from examiners, which resulted in decreased fluency in speaking. From a linguistic perspective, limited vocabulary, grammatical errors, and inaccurate pronunciation cause long pauses, word repetition, and difficulty in conveying ideas. In addition, the formal academic context requires the use of structured and spontaneous English, and limited opportunities to practice speaking also affect student performance. This study concludes that the challenge of speaking English fluently is not only caused by language ability, but can also be caused by psychological factors and academic demands. Therefore, communicative speaking instruction and a supportive academic environment are essential. Keywords: Students’ Perceptions; Fluency in Speaking; Challenges in Speaking
