Abstract

ABSTRACT Writing is one of the most essential yet challenging skills in English language learning, particularly for junior high school students who often experience difficulties in organizing ideas, selecting appropriate vocabulary, and applying correct grammar. These challenges indicate the need for innovative instructional strategies to improve students’ writing ability. One emerging approach is the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in language learning. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the effectiveness of Black Box, an AI-assisted writing tool, in improving the writing skills of eighth-grade students at MTs Al-Khairiyah, South Lampung Regency. This study employed a quasi-experimental research design involving two groups: an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group was taught using Black Box as a learning medium, while the control group received instruction through conventional teaching methods. The data were collected through pre tests and post-tests to measure students’ writing performance based on five aspects, namely content, organization, vocabulary, grammar, and mechanics. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a paired sample t-test to determine the effectiveness of the treatment. The results of the data analysis revealed a significant improvement in the students’ writing performance in the experimental group. The paired sample t-test showed a mean difference of −15.467 with a significance value of 0.000, indicating a statistically significant effect of the Black Box tool. Additionally, descriptive analysis demonstrated noticeable improvements across all writing aspects when compared to the control group. These findings suggest that Black Box is effective in supporting students’ writing development and has considerable pedagogical potential for integrating AI-based tools into English language teaching.
