Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigates the use of the Roundtable technique in improving students’ writing skills of narrative text at the eighth grade of MTs. Raudhatul Istiqomah in the academic year 2025/2026. The research employed a qualitative descriptive design, collecting data through observation, interviews, and documentation. The study aimed to describe the implementation of the Roundtable technique, identify the teacher’s challenges in applying it, and explore the students’ difficulties during the writing process. The findings revealed that the Roundtable technique was implemented through several structured stages, including forming mixed-ability groups, arranging circular seating, collaboratively developing an outline, and producing individual narrative drafts. This process successfully encouraged student participation and supported idea generation, particularly for learners who often struggled to begin writing. However, the teacher encountered several obstacles, such as time management issues, students’ limited vocabulary and grammar, unequal participation during collaborative writing, and challenges in maintaining classroom control. These problems indicated that although the technique is beneficial, it requires careful preparation and active monitoring. The results also showed that students faced various difficulties, including generating ideas, organizing narrative structure, and developing coherent paragraphs. Linguistic limitations, low confidence, and time pressure further contributed to their struggles in completing the narrative tasks. Despite these challenges, the Roundtable technique provided meaningful support by reducing writing anxiety and helping students build story sequences more effectively. Therefore, the Roundtable technique was found to be a useful group activity that helped improve students’ narrative writing skills, although its success still depends on the teacher’s guidance and the students’ language ability.
