Abstract

ABSTRAK KONSEP ZUHUD MENURUT AL-GHAZALI DAN RELEVANSINYA DENGAN GAYA HIDUP FRUGAL (FRUGAL LIVING) Oleh: Anggi Puspita Dewi Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh krisis multidimensi masyarakat modern akibat dominasi konsumerisme, hedonisme, dan materialisme. Gaya hidup frugal living muncul sebagai respons yang menekankan konsumsi sadar dan efisiensi finansial. Namun, praktik modern ini cenderung instrumental dan fokus pada stabilitas ekonomi, tanpa menyentuh dimensi spiritual sebagai solusi atas krisis makna hidup. Sementara itu, Islam memiliki konsep zuhud yang menawarkan solusi spiritual yang lebih mendalam. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memahami prinsip frugal living dalam konteks modern dan menganalisis relevansi nilai-nilai zuhud menurut Al-Ghazali dengan prinsip-prinsip gaya hidup tersebut, dengan harapan konsep zuhud dapat membimbing praktik hidup sederhana modern agar lebih bermakna secara rohani dan etis. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode studi pustaka (library research). Sumber data primer adalah kitab Ihya’ Ulumuddin karya Al Ghazali. Teknik analisis data yang digunakan adalah analisis isi, komparatif deskriptif, dan hermeneutika. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa zuhud Al Ghazali memiliki relevansi yang komplementer dengan prinsip frugal living. Secara praktik, keduanya menekankan kesederhanaan dan penolakan terhadap konsumsi berlebihan (overconsumption). Namun, secara tujuan (teleologis), frugal living berorientasi pada kestabilan finansial, sedangkan zuhud berorientasi pada penyucian jiwa (tazkiyah al-nafs) dan kedekatan dengan Allah. Relevansi integratifnya adalah konsep zuhud berfungsi sebagai fondasi spiritual yang memperkaya praktik frugal living. Zuhud menambahkan nilai niat (niyyah) untuk mengubah praktik hemat menjadi ibadah, dan menegaskan tanggung jawab sosial (redistribution wealth), sehingga mencegah frugal living jatuh pada kecenderungan individualistik atau kikir (bakhil). Dengan demikian, zuhud adalah kunci bagi frugal living agar bertransformasi dari strategi ekonomi menjadi jalan spiritual. Bagi peneliti selanjutnya, disarankan untuk melakukan penelitian kualitatif empiris atau lapangan yang mengkaji implementasi nilai-nilai zuhud Al-Ghazali terhadap perilaku frugal living pada komunitas atau individu di perkotaan. The frugal living lifestyle emerges as a response that emphasizes conscious consumption and financial efficiency. However, this modern practice tends to be instrumental and focuses mainly on economic stability, without addressing the spiritual dimension as a solution to the crisis of life’s meaning. Meanwhile, Islam offers the concept of zuhd, which provides a deeper spiritual solution. Therefore, this study aims to understand the principles of frugal living in the modern context and to analyze the relevance of Al-Ghazali’s zuhd values to these lifestyle principles, with the expectation that the concept of zuhd can guide modern simplicity practices to become more spiritually and ethically meaningful. This research employs a qualitative approach using the library research method. The primary data source is Ihya‟ Ulumuddin by Al-Ghazali. The data analysis techniques used include content analysis, comparative-descriptive analysis, and hermeneutics. The findings show that Al-Ghazali’s zuhd has complementary relevance to the principles of frugal living. Practically, both emphasize simplicity and rejection of excessive consumption (overconsumption). However, in terms of their teleological orientation, frugal living focuses on financial stability, whereas zuhd aims at the purification of the soul (tazkiyah al-nafs) and closeness to Allah. The integrative relevance lies in the role of zuhd as a spiritual foundation that enriches frugal living practices. Zuhd adds the value of niyyah (intention), transforming frugality into an act of worship, and emphasizes social responsibility (redistribution of wealth), preventing frugal living from falling into individualistic or miserly tendencies (bukhul). Thus, zuhd serves as the key for frugal living to transform from an economic strategy into a spiritual path. Future researchers are encouraged to conduct empirical or field studies exploring the implementation of Al Ghazali’s zuhd values in frugal living behavior among urban communities or individuals.
