Abstract

ABSTRACT Reading is an interactive activity to pick and understand the meanings contained in written materials. Reading involves communication between the reader and the text. This research was motivated by the low reading comprehension ability of eighth-grade students at SMPN 21 Bandar Lampung. The aims of the study to ascertain whether there is significant effectiveness of using infographics on students’ reading comprehension in junior high school. The study used a quantitative data with a quasi-experimental design. The population was eighth-grade students of SMPN 21 Bandar Lampung. The study sample consisted of two classes selected through cluster random sampling: the experimental class with 30 students and control class with 30 students. The research instrument was a multiple-choice test in pre-test and post-test validated by expert for validity and reability, which measured aspects of reading comprehension. The data were analyzed using an independent sample t-test. An Independent sample T-test was used to assess the data. The results showed a significant difference in students' reading comprehension between the experimental and control groups. The Sig. (2-tailed) value was 0.000 < 0.05, indicating that the use of infographics had a significant effect on students' reading comprehension. It is concluded that infographic media is effective in improving students’ reading comprehension and can be recommended as an alternative visual learning strategy in English language teaching.
