Abstract

ABSTRACT High-frequency vocabulary refers to a list of the most commonly used words in both written texts and daily conversations for example ‗time‘, ‗person‘, ‗see‘, ‗get‘, ‗good‘, and ‗new‘. The Internet, as a major source of language input, provides students with vast information and is highly beneficial for acquiring vocabulary, especially high-frequency vocabulary. However, not all students have daily access to the Internet, particularly dormitory students who are restricted by dormitory school regulations from using mobile phones and the Internet during and after school hours. The problem arose from the observation that students at MA Muhammadiyah Bandar Lampung are naturally divided into two groups: dormitory students with restricted internet access without daily access both in the dormitory and school, also non-dormitory students with unrestricted access outside school hours with daily internet access minimum 6 hours. Although teachers assumed there was no significant difference, this research was conducted to scientifically test that assumption. This study aims to compare the high-frequency vocabulary knowledge between students with restricted and unrestricted internet access. Using a quantitative approach and a causal-comparative design, this study compared 10 students from each group who met specific criteria. The instrument used was a high-frequency vocabulary test adapted from the New General Service List Test (NGSLT). The results of the hypothesis testing using the Mann-Whitney U test showed a significance value (p-value) of 0.393. Since this value is greater than 0.05, (p>0.05) the null hypothesis cannot be rejected. Therefore, it is concluded that there is no significant difference in high-frequency vocabulary knowledge between students with restricted and unrestricted Internet access.
