Abstract

ABSTRACT From an Islamic economic perspective, this study aims to analyze the influence of the population dependency ratio, economic growth, and the Human Development Index (HDI) on income inequality in the southern part of Sumatra (Sumbagsel). This study is based on panel data from six provinces in Sumbagsel during the period 2015– 2024. Data analysis was conducted using EViews 12 software. The results indicate that income inequality is positively and significantly influenced by the dependency ratio, and negatively and significantly influenced by the HDI. Meanwhile, economic growth does not show a significant influence on income inequality. The F-statistic probability value of 0.0000 indicates that all three variables simultaneously have a significant influence on income inequality. These findings indicate that improving the quality of human development can contribute to reducing inequality, while a high dependency ratio tends to exacerbate it. From an Islamic economic perspective, equitable development through strengthening the quality of human resources and equitable distribution of wealth is a fundamental principle in promoting inclusive and sustainable economic growth.
