Abstract

ABSTRACT AN ANALYSIS OF MORPHOLOGICAL ERROR IN STUDENTS WRITING TASK AT SMAN 3 KOTABUMI By: Ridho Irawan This research entitled “An Analysis of Morphological Errors in Students’ Writing at SMAN 3 Kotabumi” aims to identify and analyze the types of morphological errors made by students in their English writing tasks. The study employed a descriptive qualitative method involving 34 students as the subjects. The data were collected through students’ writing tasks and analyzed based on the Surface Structure Taxonomy proposed by Dulay, Burt, and Krashen (1982), which classifies errors into four categories: omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. The findings revealed that the students made a total of 112 morphological errors. The errors consisted of 45 omission errors (40.17%), 19 addition errors (16.96%), 43 misformation errors (38.39%), and 5 misordering errors (4.46%). The most frequent type of error was omission, indicating that students often omitted necessary morphemes such as plural markers, tense markers, or affixes. These errors occurred due to limited knowledge of morphological rules and the influence of the students’ first language. In conclusion, the results of this research show that morphological errors still frequently appear in students’ English writing. It suggests that teachers should provide more focused instruction on morphological awareness and the use of affixes to improve students’ grammatical accuracy in writing.
