Abstract

ABSTRACT The increase in juvenile delinquency and moral degradation among students requires the strengthening of character education in schools. The Merdeka Curriculum emphasizes the integration of character education through the Pancasila Student Profile, thus requiring an in depth analysis of the character values embedded in learning materials, especially textbooks, as the main source of learning. The main issues of this research include the need for comprehensive learning media in character education and the importance of selecting textbooks that are in line with the curriculum and student needs. This research aims to identify the types of character education values and to analyze the techniques used to integrate character education values embedded in the reading texts of the seventh-grade English textbook entitled "English for Nusantara" published by the Ministry of Education and Culture. The theoretical framework used in this research is based on the Pancasila Student Profile in the Merdeka curriculum. This research employed a qualitative research design with qualitative content analysis. The components of content analysis research design consisted of: (1) data condensation, (2) data display, and (3) drawing and verifying conclusions. The source of the data was the English textbook entitled English for Nusantara for Junior High School Grade VII. The data were 13 reading texts that were collected through reading and taking notes of the texts in the English textbook English for Nusantara, published by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology in 2022. The data were analyzed using content analysis. The findings of the research showed that: (1) the character values that are found in the 13 reading texts of the English textbook being analyzed cover 29 character values proposed by the Ministry of Education and Culture within the Pancasila Student Profile. The six dimensions of the Pancasila Student Profile are embedded in reading texts of the English textbook. But some of the elements were not contained. Furthermore, the dimension of faith and character, cooperation, and creativity is the most strongly conveyed in the textbook, as it is presented through both powerful word choices and supporting visual illustrations. This combination of strong textual content and relevant images makes the message more effective and meaningful for students. (2) The techniques are used to integrate character education in the reading texts of the seventh-grade English textbook, English for Nusantara, which consists of two forms: explicit and implicit techniques. The implicit technique is the most used. Keywords: Character Education, Pancasila Student Profile, English
