Abstract

ABSTRACT THE USE OF BUSUU APPLICATION TOWARDS STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY AT JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL By: SYNTIA RINDU PRAMESTI Vocabulary plays an essential role in supporting students’ English language skills. However, the English vocabulary learning process at SMP Negeri 1 Abung Semuli, North Lampung, was still low. In learning activities, teachers had not utilized engaging learning media and only relied on textbooks as the primary source. This caused the learning process to become less efficient and interactive. Therefore, this research aims to determine whether there is an influence of using the Busuu application on the vocabulary mastery of seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Abung Semuli. The research methodology used in this research was a quasi experimental design. The research population consisted of seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Abung Semuli. The research sample was divided into two classes, the experimental class VII D with 31 students and the control class VII C with 31 students. Thus, the total research sample comprised 62 students. The experimental class used the Busuu application, while the control class used textbooks. In collecting data, this research utilized a test instrument in the form of multiple-choice questions consisting of 18 items for the pre-test and 19 items for the post test. The treatment was conducted over two meetings. Before the treatment, a pre-test was administered to both classes. Furthermore, after the treatment, a post-test was given to both classes. After given pre-test and post-test, this research was analyzed by using SPSS version 27. The results of data analysis showed that there was a significant difference in students’ vocabulary scores before and after treatment. This can be observed from the data analysis using SPSS. This research used hypothesis testing, specifically the T-test (Independent Samples Test), to assess the statistical significance of the influence of using the Busuu application on students’ vocabulary scores. Based on the T-test results conducted using SPSS version 27, the significance value (Sig.) obtained iii was 0.037 and α = 0.05. This means Ha was accepted because Sig. < α = 0.037 < 0.05. It can be concluded that the use of the Busuu application has a significant influence on students’ vocabulary mastery in seventh grade at SMP Negeri 1 Abung Semuli.
