Abstract

ABSTRACT Teacher often face challenges in teaching writing because students have limited ability to organize ideas and use appropriate grammar and vocabulary. In this case, the teacher’s strategy plays an important role in helping students understand and produce written texts effectively. The objective of this research was to find out the strategies used by the English teacher in teaching writing short functional text at the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 1 Cilegon. This research is descriptive with a qualitative approach. The purpose of this research was to analyze the strategies employed by the teacher in teaching writing short functional text and to describe how these strategies were implemented in the classroom, including the challenges encountered during the process. the data collected through observation, interview, and documentation. The results indicated that the teacher applied several strategies such as brainstorming, small group discussions, playing games, and presentation, supported using pictures as instructional media. These strategies helped students to generate ideas more easily, enrich their vocabulary, and organize short functional texts in a clearer way. The strategies chosen were more general in nature and not specifically aimed at teaching writing. The strategies implemented by the teacher were still categorized as general teaching strategies rather than specific strategies for teaching writing. The teacher selected these approaches because they were considered simple, interactive, and effective in enhancing students’ motivation and engagement. The challenges identified during the process include limited instructional time and the varying levels of students’ writing abilities.
