Abstract

ABSTRACT The objective of the research is to find out whether the ESA method is effective or not in teaching vocabulary mastery to eight grade students at UPTD SMPN 1 Sekampung Udik in the academic year of 2024/2025. This research used a quasi-experimental design, with the eighth grade students of UPTD SMPN 1 Sekampung Udik as the population. The sample was selected using cluster random sampling and consisted of two groups. Class VIIIA was the experimental class with 34 students, while class VIIIC was the control class with 33 students. The experimental class was taught using the ESA method, while the control class was taught using the PBL method, which is the usual teaching method in that school. Data were collected through multiple choice tests for both the pre-test and post-test. An independent sample t-test was used for data analysis. The analysis showed the result of Sig (P-value) was 0.007, which is less than α = 0.05. This indicates that Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted, confirming a significant effect of using the Engage, Study, Activate (ESA) method towards students’ vocabulary mastery at eight grade students of UPTD SMPN 1 Sekampung Udik.
