Abstract

ABSTRACT This phenomenological study explores the challenges faced by tenth-grade students at MA Al-Hikmah Bandar Lampung in listening comprehension. The novelty of this study lies in its specific focus on students at MA Al-Hikmah as the subject of investigation. This population presents a unique study context, primarily due to school regulations prohibiting the use of electronic devices which are typically integral to effective listening comprehension practice. The study investigates the students' experiences, opinions, and responses to these challenges, focusing on the linguistic elements of listening comprehension instruction. Data was collected through non-participant observation, semi structured interviews, and focus group discussions. The study identifies several key challenges, including inability to focus, weak grammar and pronunciation skills, difficulty with different accents and tones, comprehension issues with long spoken texts, limited vocabulary, and a lack of access to resources and practice. The study also examines the strategies students employ to negotiate these challenges. Those are modifying listening materials, improving pronunciation, familiarizing themselves with various accents, expanding vocabulary, and enhancing the learning environment. The findings highlight the interconnectedness of listener-related issues, task-related problems, and the impact of the physical environment on listening comprehension. The study concludes by offering recommendations for teachers and students to address these challenges and improve listening comprehension skills. It emphasizes how student-related issues, task-related problems, and the physical environment are interconnected in their impact on listening comprehension.
