Abstract

ABSTRACT Speaking skills are essential skills in English learning because they reflect active communication skills. This study aims to describe the effect of the Intensive Foreign Language Learning Program (IFL) on students' intrinsic motivation to speak English. The study employed a mixed-methods approach with a convergent design, where quantitative and qualitative data were collected and analyzed in parallel, and the results were compared to obtain a comprehensive understanding. The subjects were 21 second-semester English Language Education students who had participated in the IFL program. Data were collected through questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and classroom observations. The results indicate that IFL positively impacted students' self-confidence, interest, and willingness to speak English. These findings are exploratory and limited to a small participant population, but provide a preliminary indication that intrinsic motivation can be fostered through an active learning approach and a supportive environment.
