Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims to analyze the types and senses of cultural content represented in the English textbook entitled “Bright an English” for the first grade of Junior High School. The research is grounded in the idea that language learning is inseparable from cultural understanding. Therefore, this study investigates how cultural elements are integrated into the textbook, focusing on the representation of Source Culture (SC), Target Culture (TC), and International Culture (IC), as well as the cultural senses they convey, including aesthetic, sociological, semantic, and pragmatic sense. The research employs a qualitative content analysis approach. To classify the types of culture, the study adopts Cortazzi and Jin’s (1999) framework, while the senses of culture are examined through the lens of Adaskou et al.’s categorization. The data taken was the reading text in “Bright an English” textbook for first grade of junior high school. Data analysis was done by organizing and familiarizing, coding and reducing, interpreting and representing. The findings reveal that the textbook includes 68 cultural items, with Source Culture being the most dominant (32.4%), followed by Target Culture (25%) and International Culture (13.2%). Combined cultural types and neutral items make up the remainder. In terms of cultural senses, the sociological sense is the most prevalent (52.9%), highlighting aspects such as daily life and social norms. These results suggest the textbook supports identity building through source culture, yet it should incorporate more exposure to target and international cultures to better develop students’ intercultural competence and global awareness in language learning.
