Abstract

ABSTRACT Ectoparasites are organisms that live on the surface of cats and can cause health problems such as irritation, anemia, and secondary diseases. This study aimed to determine the prevalence, types, and forms of ectoparasite infestation (single or coinfection), as well as to analyze the risk factors associated with these infestation patterns in cats from several veterinary clinics in Bandar Lampung. A quantitative cross-sectional design was applied, involving 78 cats obtained through purposive sampling. Data were collected through direct observation of ectoparasite infestation and questionnaires distributed to cat owners, and then analyzed using chi-square tests and binary logistic regression. The results showed that Ctenocephalides felis, Otodectes cynotis, and Lynxacarus radovskyi were the most common ectoparasites found, with a coinfection prevalence of 33.3%. Chi-square tests revealed that sterilization status, sand bathing, hunting behavior, antiparasitic treatment, interaction with other animals, and defecation on soil were significantly associated with infestation forms (p<0.05). However, logistic regression analysis indicated that only defecation on soil was statistically significant in relation to coinfection (p=0.032; OR=0.149). In conclusion, cat behavior and care practices play a crucial role in shaping ectoparasite infestation patterns, suggesting that preventive interventions should focus on environmental management and owner education.
