Abstract

ABSTRACT Economic growth is a key indicator of regional development success. BPS data for 2019–2024 shows that ten provinces in Indonesia recorded the lowest economic growth rates. This raises questions about the role of population size, development index, and the open unemployment rate in driving economic growth. The study aims to analyze the influence of these three variables on economic growth in the selected provinces and to examine the findings from the perspective of Islamic economics, which emphasizes a balance between material and spiritual development. This research applies a quantitative method with panel data analysis. The estimation models used include the Common Effect Model (CEM), Fixed Effect Model (FEM), and Random Effect Model (REM), with the best model determined through Chow, Hausman, and Lagrange Multiplier (LM) tests. Further tests, including F-test, t-test, and coefficient of determination (R²), were conducted to assess both partial and simultaneous effects. The data were obtained from official BPS publications for the period 2019–2024. The findings indicate that population size and the development index do not significantly affect economic growth, while the open unemployment rate has a significant negative effect. Simultaneously, the three variables have not been able to optimally stimulate economic growth. From the perspective of Islamic economics, ideal development should not only focus on quantitative aspects but also consider morality, equitable welfare distribution, and the principle of maslahah to achieve falah.
