Abstract

ABSTRACT This research aims to investigate the influence of using the 5E instructional model (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate) on the writing ability of eighth-grade students in recount texts at SMPN 17 Bandar Lampung. The study focuses on students' skills in writing recount texts in English lessons, particularly in classrooms where teachers still apply conventional teaching methods. The 5E instructional model, as an active and cooperative learning strategy, enables students to build engagement, explore ideas, explain concepts, develop their potential, and evaluate their work effectively. This study employs a quantitative approach with an experimental design. Two classes are randomly selected as the sample: one serves as the experimental group taught using the 5E model, and the other as the control group taught through a conventional lecture-based method. Pre-tests and post-tests are administered to assess students' writing ability in recount texts. The data are analysed using descriptive statistics and an independent sample t-test with the aid of SPSS software. The results reveal a significant influence in the experimental group compared to the control group. This is supported by the N-Gain scores, with the experimental group achieving an average score of 0.73, while the control group scores 0.28. These findings indicate that the use of the 5E instructional model enhances students‟ learning outcomes in writing recount texts. Therefore, this study concludes that the 5E instructional model is an effective strategy for improving students‟ writing skills, particularly at the junior secondary school level. Keywords: 5E instructional model, English language learning, recount text, writing ability.
