Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims to examine the errors made by third-semester students of the English Education Department at UIN Raden Intan Lampung in writing short paragraphs. Specifically, it investigates two main problems: (1) the types of sentence-level errors found in students’ writing based on the Surface Strategy Taxonomy, and (2) the types of morphological process errors based on O’Grady’s theory. The objectives are to analyze and classify the students’ errors according to Surface Strategy Taxonomy and to categorize them within the framework of morphological process theory. The research employed a qualitative approach, using the error analysis model proposed by Dulay et al. The study was conducted at the English Education Department of UIN Raden Intan Lampung. The data analysis procedures included collecting students’ writing, identifying errors, classifying them, calculating the percentage of each error type, and reporting the findings. The results indicated that, according to the Surface Strategy Taxonomy, the most common error was misformation (50.60%), followed by omission (32.31%), addition (11.58%), and misordering (5.48%). In terms of morphological process, the errors found in affixation was the most frequent (54.17%), followed by suppletion (41.67%). Internal change appeared only once, and no compounding errors were found. This study highlights frequent student errors in misformation, omission, affixation, and suppletion. Future researchers should explore L1 interference, pragmatics, and error impact on meaning. Teachers are advised to emphasize grammar, vocabulary, and contrastive analysis, while students should focus on practicing grammar, revising work, and using feedback to improve writing accuracy.
