Abstract

ABSTRACT This research investigates students’ perceptions of using serial image media in English language learning, particularly in enhancing reading comprehension. The study was conducted at SMP Al Kautsar Bandar Lampung during the 2024/2025 academic year and involved 96 ninth-grade students from classes IX A, IX D, and IX I, selected through purposive sampling. A quantitative descriptive method was applied using a non-experimental survey design. Data were collected through a 20-item closed-ended questionnaire, which was validated using Pearson Product Moment and tested for reliability using Cronbach’s Alpha. The findings showed that students clearly had a positive perception of the use of serial images in reading lessons. The highest average score was found in the aspect of Learning Process and Skill Development (Mean = 3.77), followed by Direct Experience (3.71), Challenges (3.34), and General Perception (3.33). Students agreed that serial images helped them understand texts more easily, supported vocabulary learning, and made reading activities more enjoyable. Although a few challenges were mentioned, such as occasional unclear visuals, the overall response reflected confidence in the effectiveness of this medium. These results support Mayer’s Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning, which states that students learn better when information is presented using both visual and verbal elements. In conclusion, students perceive serial-image media as a helpful, engaging, and effective tool to improve their reading comprehension in English. Therefore, teachers are encouraged to continue implementing this media to support student motivation and learning outcomes.
