Abstract

THE EFFECTIVENESS OF A WORD SEARCH GAME PUZZLE AS A MEDIUM FOR TEACHING VOCABULARY AT MTS MIFTAHUL ULUM BANDAR LAMPUNG ABSTRACT Vocabulary is a crucial aspect of language learning, particularly for junior high school students developing their English language skills. However, many students struggle to master vocabulary due to limited motivation, inadequate exposure to new lexical items, and monotonous teaching methods. This research aimed to investigate the effectiveness of Word Search Game Puzzle as a medium for teaching vocabulary to eighth-grade students at MTs Miftahul Ulum Bandar Lampung. The study employed a quantitative approach with a quasi experimental design. The population consisted of all eighth-grade students, and two classes were selected as the experimental and control groups. The experimental class was taught using Word Search Game Puzzle as an instructional medium, while the control class received conventional instruction. Data were collected through a pre-test and post-test to measure students' vocabulary mastery before and after the treatment. The results showed a significant improvement in the vocabulary scores of the experimental group compared to the control group. Based on the statistical analysis using an independent sample t test, the p-value was lower than 0.05, indicating that the use of Word Search Game Puzzle was effective in enhancing students’ vocabulary achievement. Therefore, it can be concluded that Word Search Game Puzzle is an effective and engaging medium for teaching English vocabulary in MTs Miftahul Ulum Bandar Lampung.
