Abstract

ABSTRAK This research was motivated by the low writing ability of students, particularly in writing short story texts, which is considered the most challenging language skill. Students often struggle to evaluate and revise their writing due to a lack of understanding about which parts need improvement. Additionally, students' motivation to write is low, partly because classroom learning conditions are less engaging. At MA Raudlatul Muta’allimin, students' short story writing scores remain below the Minimum Mastery Criteria (KKM), indicating the need for innovative learning media to enhance writing skills. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of using cartoon films as a medium during the pre-writing stage in improving students’ ability to write short story texts, especially for class X students of MA Raudlatul Muta'allimin Kasui, which consists of 2 classes. The research employed a pre-experimental method with a one-group pretest-posttest design. The subjects consisted of 30 students from class XB. The researcher used a problem-based learning model. The treatment was conducted over three meetings, each lasting 2 x 40 minutes. Data collection was carried out using a short story writing test administered before and after the treatment. Based on the result of the data analysis, the researcher concluded that there a significant influence of using cartoon films as media on students’ writing ability in narrative text. The result could be seen from Sig. (2-tailed) of the equal variance assumed in the independent sample T-test table, where the Sig. (2- tailed) was 0.00 was lower than α = 0.05. It indicated that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. Because of that, teaching writing using cartoon films could have a significant effect on students’ writing ability in short story texts. In conclusion, using cartoon films as a medium in the pre-writing stage is proven effective in enhancing students’ ability to write short story texts. This medium facilitates idea generation, increases motivation, and creates a more engaging and enjoyable learning atmosphere. Keywords: cartoon film media, pre-writimg stage, short story text, writing ability, writing instruction.
