Abstract

Foreign debt is an important issue for developing countries, including members of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), because it can affect economic stability and social development. This research focuses on the relationship between these macroeconomic variables to understand the dynamics of foreign debt from an Islamic economic perspective, which prioritizes the principles of justice and sustainability. The research method used is a quantitative approach with multiple linear regression analysis. The data used is secondary data which includes currency exchange rates, inflation and GNP from 11 ASEAN countries, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Singapore, Brunei Darussalam, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar and Timor Leste. Tests were carried out using panel data models and various statistical tests, including the Chow test, Hausman test, and Lagrange Multiplier test to determine the appropriate model. The results of the analysis aim to identify the influence of each independent variable on foreign debt. The research results show that inflation has a significant influence on foreign debt, with a positive coefficient indicating that increasing inflation tends to encourage countries to take on more debt to support the domestic economy. In contrast, currency exchange rates and GNP do not show a significant influence on foreign debt, with coefficient values not strong enough to be considered relevant. From an Islamic economic perspective, these results underline the importance of wise, sharia-based foreign debt management, which avoids usury practices and ensures that debt is used for sustainable development. Overall, this research concludes that foreign debt management must consider inflation factors and broader economic conditions, as well as the application of Islamic economic principles to achieve sustainability and justice.
