Abstract

ABSTRACT This research was done because of many seventh-grade students struggle in pronouncing -ed endings correctly due to difficulties in distinguishing the /t/, /d/, and /ɪd/ sounds. These pronunciation errors can affect their speaking skills and overall language comprehension. However, pronuncation is often neglected in English learning at schools, making it challenging for students to improve their accuracy. The purpose of the research is to improve the students‘ pronunciation of ending -ed by implementing the ELSA Speak application. The research design was Classroom action research (CAR) by Kemmis & McTaggart Model with two cycles, each consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection. The instrument used was Observation Sheets, Pre-test and Post-test. This study applied quantitative and qualitative data analysis. The participants were 32 of seventh-grade-students in the 2024/2025 academic year of SMPN 1 Candipuro, Lampung Selatan. The result showed that there is an improvement in students' pronunciation, particularly in mastering -ed ending rules. It can be seen that the average pre-test score was 56.25, indicating low proficiency in pronouncing -ed endings. After implementing the ELSA Speak application, the post-test I score increased to 72.81, and in post-test II, it further improved to 83.28. Additionally, students became more confident and motivated in learning pronunciation. However, challenges included varying learning speeds, limited fluency assessment, and external motivational factors. The study concludes that the implementation of ELSA Speak application can improve the ability of students‘ pronunciation of pronouncing /t/, /d/, and /ɪd/ sounds of ending –ed.
