Abstract

ABSTRACT This study is motivated by the increasing popularity of podcasts, particularly on the YouTube platform, as an effective medium of communication. In podcasts, illocutionary acts play a significant role in conveying meaning and specific purposes through the speakers' utterances. The subject of this study is the podcast titled ―Raisa Takes Eric Nam Behind-the-Scenes of Her Life and Collab with Sam Kim! Daebak Show Ep. #135,‖ featuring a conversation between Eric Nam and Raisa. The aim of this research is to analyze the kinds of illocutionary acts, and the functions of illocutionary acts in the conversation between Eric Nam and Raisa in the specified episode. In this research, the researcher choose the video of podcast Dive Studios. The researcher chooses those videos because podcasts, especially on YouTube, are popular because they feature meaningful exchanges between speakers making them ideal for studying illocutionary acts. This research employed descriptive qualitative analysis. The data collecting technique of this research is documentation, and the data analysis technique is used data condensation, data display and verification. The instrument of this research is the researcher herself. After doing the analysis, the reasearcher found all six types of illocutionary acts from Bach and Harnish‘s theory were found in their interaction. These include constative, directive, commissive, acknowledgement, effective, and verdictive. Among these, directive and acknowledgement acts appeared most frequently. On the other hand, verdictive acts were rarely used, which suggests that direct judgments or evaluations didn‘t occur often. When looking at the functions of illocutionary acts using Leech‘s theory, only three out of four functions were found: competitive, collaborative, and convivial. The most dominant was the convivial function, which shows that the conversation had a friendly and relaxed tone, reflecting a positive relationship between the speakers. The conflictive function didn‘t appear at all, meaning there were no arguments or disagreements during the discussion. Keywords: Illocutionary Acts, Speech Acts, Pragmatics, Dive Studios, Podcast.
