Abstract

ABSTRACT THE CORRELATION BETWEEN STUDENTS’ MOTIVATION AND THEIR SPEAKING ABILITY AT ENGLISH EDUCATION STUDENTS IN UIN RADEN INTAN LAMPUNG By: Dea Putri This research is entitled “The Correlation Between Students' Motivation and Their Speaking Ability in English Education Study Program of UIN Raden Intan Lampung.” This study aims to identify the relationship between students' motivation in learning English and their speaking ability. Motivation was measured using a questionnaire that refers to Gardner's theory of integrative and instrumental motivation. Speaking ability was evaluated through a speaking test involving a job simulated interview. This research was conducted in third semester at English Education students in UIN Raden Intan Lampung. This research applied correlational research design with using cluster random sampling to choose the sample. The population of this research was third semester English Education students in UIN Raden Intan Lampung in the academic year 2023/2024. The number of samples selected was 23 students. The instruments of the research were motivation questionnaire and speaking test. The results showed that students' average motivation was in the medium category, while their speaking ability was average to good. Data analysis using Pearson Correlation revealed a significant positive correlation between students' motivation and speaking ability, with a correlation coefficient value of 0.575. This finding indicates that an increase in students' motivation is potentially followed by an increase in their speaking ability. Based on the results of the study, it is concluded that motivation plays an important role in the development of students' speaking ability. Therefore, it is recommended that teachers focus their attention on motivation enhancement strategies in the English learning process, so that students are more active and confident in communicating.
