Abstract

ABSTRACT This study explores the benefits of habitual Netflix series watching on students' English-speaking skills. Speaking is a crucial yet challenging skill for learners, as it requires mastery of pronunciation, vocabulary, fluency, grammar, and comprehension. Many students struggle with speaking due to a lack of confidence, vocabulary limitations, and minimal exposure to authentic English conversations. This research employs a qualitative case study approach, focusing on students from the English Education Department at UIN Raden Intan Lampung who regularly watch English-language Netflix series. Through interviews and thematic analysis, the study investigates whether and how continuous exposure to English through Netflix improves students' speaking abilities. This study has certain limitations. As a case study, the findings are not meant to be generalized to a broader population. The research employs a small, non-random sample, as participants were selected based on their active Netflix subscriptions. Consequently, only four students from the English Education Department met the criteria and were included in the study. Future research with a larger and more diverse sample may provide further insights into the impact of continued Netflix viewing on language learning. In conclusion, the findings of the research are in three main ways: authentic language exposure, as regular contact with natural English helps participants get used to real conversations and often mimic native pronunciation; increased speaking confidence, as frequent listening boosts their self-assurance in speaking; and the role of subtitles, which aid comprehension and vocabulary development by showing the words being spoken. Keywords: English learning, language exposure, media-based learning, Netflix, speaking skill.
