Abstract

ABSTRACT The main purpose of teaching reading in general is to develop students' reading skills so that they can access information-and keep up with technological developments. This strategy makes it easier for teachers to create positive peer modeling for struggling students. However, the reality is that many students have difficulty in reading comprehension of narrative text. This can be caused by several factors, such as lack of interest and motivation to read, limited vocabulary, lack of reading strategies, and lack of reading practice. Furthermore, this research aims to find out whether there is influence of paired reading (PR) strategy in learning reading comprehension of narrative texts for class VII MTs As-Syifa Karang Sari Jati Agung. In this research, the researcher used quantitative method to provide the results of this research. The use of quantitative method is aimed to know whether the students' reading skill improvement or not when paired reading was implemented in classroom. Any research that focuses on counting things and understanding the patterns that emerge from those counts was called quantitative research. This research used quasi experimental design. In conducting the research applied quasi experimental. The researcher assigns intact groups the experimental and control treatments, administers a pretest to both groups, conducts experimental treatment activities with the experimental group only, and then administers a post-test to assess the differences between the two groups. It means that, this research did not make new classes for experimental. Then, the researcher just chooses two classes for control and experimental class. This design of this research used quasi experimental research design (one group pretest-posttest design) that consists of pre-test, treatment and post-test. After gaining the data from both control and experimental class by pre-test and post-test, the researcher determined the result of the research by using SPSS. The analysis of the hypothetical testing was resulted sig. (2-tailed) value was 0.000 which lower than 0.05. thus, the researcher can conclude that the alternative hypothesis was accepted and null hypothesis was rejected. In the context of this research, Paired reading strategy had role as X variable or independent variable and Students’ ability in reading narrative text at the seventh grade of MTs As-Syifa Karang Sari Jati Agung had role as Y or dependent variable. This result approved that There was an influence of Paired Reading (PR) strategy on students' reading comprehension on narrative text in the seventh grade of MTs As-Syifa Karang Sari Jati Agung.
