Abstract

ABSTRACT The first step in learning a language was to build a vocabulary because it was an essential language component. Students of English as a foreign language (EFL) or English as a second language (ESL) found it hard to understand the target language without learning and having enough vocabulary. An appropriate approach or methodology was required to make teaching and learning easier and more enjoyable. One approach for boosting students' confidence in their ability to study, especially English, was through the short story strategy. The Fix-Up Strategy was selected for this study and used to teach vocabulary at the ninth grade of SMP Ma’arif NU 04 Darurrohmah in the academic year of 2024/2025. This research used a pre-experimental design method. Whereas the form of the design was "pre-test and post-test one group design," namely research only used one experimental class without any comparison class or control class. The sample of this research was students of the 9-1 class of SMP Ma’arif NU 04 Drurromah. This research used tests to collect the data, namely pre-test and post-test. The pre-test was conducted before the treatment, whereas the post-test was conducted after the treatment. The finding of this research could be seen from the difference in the students’ mean scores on the pre-test and post-test. The mean score of the pre-test was 47.95 and on the post-test was 47.72. In addition, based on the analysis of the data calculation, it was obtained that a value of significant sig. (2 tailed) 0.931 < 0.05. It could be concluded that Ho was accepted and Ha was rejected. There was no significant influence on students’ vocabulary mastery after the implementation of the Fix-Up Strategy. It caused students to see less motivation when taking the post-test. Therefore, the researcher suggests that other researchers should focus more on increasing students’ learning motivation. Keywords: Pre-Experimental Design, Vocabulary Mastery, Fix-Up Strategy
