Abstract
ABSTRACT This study aims to analyze the sentence patterns and identify the most dominant phrases in the transcript of President Joko Widodo’s speech at Ecosperity Week 2023, held at the Sands Expo and Convention Center, Singapore. The research applies Randolph Quirk’s theory of sentence patterns to classify the syntactic structures within the speech. Additionally, Diana D. Bornstein’s Tree Diagram theory is utilized to visualize these patterns, offering a hierarchical representation of grammatical relationships and functions. Through syntactic analysis, this study examines how words and phrases are structured into coherent sentences, providing insights into the linguistic composition of the speech. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach. The primary data source is the official transcript of President Joko Widodo’s speech at Ecosperity Week 2023. Content analysis is used to systematically identify and interpret specific linguistic elements within the text, focusing on sentence structure and phrase distribution. The findings indicate that the speech contains six primary sentence patterns: SV (Subject-Verb), SVO (Subject-Verb-Object), SVC (Subject-Verb-Complement), SVA (Subject-Verb-Adverbial), SVOO (Subject-Verb-Object-Object), and SVOA (Subject-Verb-Object-Adverbial). Among these, the SVO and SVC patterns are the most frequently used, as they enhance clarity and emphasize key points within the speech. The tree diagram analysis further reveals that Noun Phrases and Prepositional Phrases are the most dominant phrase structures. Moreover, the speech conveys a strong message of Indonesia’s commitment to sustainable development and global collaboration. This study concludes that syntactic analysis, particularly through sentence pattern classification and tree diagram visualization, provides valuable insights into the structural composition of formal speeches. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of English syntax, supporting language learning and teaching by illustrating appropriate grammatical structures for both written and spoken discourse. . Keywords: Diagram Theory, Sentence Pattern, Syntax.
