Abstract
ABSTRACT Grammar is one of the most important parts of a language in English. However, many students still make the grammatical errors, particularly in speaking. The most effective method for analyzing students' grammatical errors in speaking is impromptu. The objectives of this research were: (1) To analyze the types of grammatical errors in students' speaking impromptu (2) To find out the causes of the grammatical errors in students' speaking impromptu. This research was conducted using the descriptive-qualitative method. The population of the research were the fourth-semester students of English Education at UIN Raden Intan Lampung, while the sample consisted of 20 students. The sample was chosen by using the purposive sampling technique. In collecting the data, the researcher observed and recorded the students’ speaking impromptu. The recording was used for identifying the students’ grammatical errors in order to analyze the types of the errors based on Carl James, which consisted of morphology error and syntax error. The grammatical error identification is limited to the tense error. In addition, the researcher interviewed the students by using a focus group interview in order to find the causes of error based on Norrish's theory, which consisted of carelessness, first language interference, and translation. The result showed that from the total of 20 students, 19 students were identified in making the grammatical errors in tenses. And there were 2 types found in this research. In morphology error, the verb morphology errors were found with a total of 101 errors. In syntax errors, clause errors were found with a total of 33 errors. The error tense is dominated by the incorrect forms of simple present tense and past tense. Furthermore, the result of the interview showed that the students made the errors due to carelessness, first language interference, and translation.
