Abstract

ABSTRACT Language features are the basis of efficient communication. Learning language features is critical for successful interpersonal and intercultural communication. The research aims to identify Women's Language Features used by Female Characters in Moxie Movie. In addition, this study examines the Social Factors that influence the use of language features. This research addresses this gap by investigating how language feature traits are related to certain factors that influenced features use in the context of Moxie movie. This study analyzes the data by using Lakoff's theory of Women’s Language Features and Holmes’s Social Factor theory. The data source was collected from Moxie Movie script. Documentation method was used to collect the data in this study; the collected data were analyzed by using Qualitative Content Analysis methods based on the Women’s Language Features found in Moxie Movie. This research used Human instrument as the primary instrument. The researcher collected data through steps by watching the Moxie Movie; reading the conversations that contain women's language features in the script of Moxie Movie; find and mark out the words and phrases on the data that contain Women's Language Features. In addition, the researcher analyzed the data by identified and categorized the features in Moxie movie. The findings show that nine out of ten Women’s Language Features are used. They consisted of Lexical Hedges or Fillers; it is the type of Women's Language Features that are mostly used by Female Characters. Lexical Hedges can be used when women feel hesitant when expressing statements or filler words used to mark a pause or hesitation in speech. Intensifiers; women tended to emphasize that the statement is true and the statement is said to usually happen. Tag Questions; it can be used to seek information or questions being asked to encourage other speakers to participate in the conversation. Rising Intonation on Declaratives; it is to show the woman's surprised attitude, as if seeking confirmation of her own statement and it includes a rising intonation at the end of the sentence ending with a question mark. Avoidance of Strong Swear Words; means indicate the expression of annoyance by avoiding harsh swear words, etc. This study also shows that Social Factors influenced the features. They consisted of Functions; The speaker's function in conveying statements to the listener in a conversation can influence the use of features. Topics; it means a topic in conversation influenced features. Settings; place and time in conversation illustrate iii the impact of setting on language choice. Participants; it indicates how participants and actions influence linguistic features in various situations. The results show not all women's language features are used in the speech of three female characters, they have different social factors that influenced them because it depends on what context of situation happened in each dialogue.
