Abstract

ABSTRACT This research discussed figurative language in song lyrics of the album “Bitter Sweet Love” by James Arthur. The objectives of this study were to identify the types of figurative language found in the song lyrics of James Arthur's "Bitter Sweet Love" album based on Perrine's theory and to know the most frequent type of figurative language found in the songs. This research focused on analyzing the figurative language found in the "Bitter Sweet Love" album by James Arthur. In this study, the descriptive qualitative method was used. The instruments of this research were documentation and the researcher itself. In analyzing the data, the writer used the concept by Miles and Huberman; they were data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The result of this research showed that the most frequent type of figurative language used in the song lyrics is hyperbole and symbol. In this research, 25 data were found. There were 3 data of simile, 5 data of metaphor, 2 data of personification, 6 data of hyperbole, 6 data of symbol, 1 data of paradox, 1 data of apostrophe, and 1 data of irony.
