Abstract

Analysis of Maxim Violation of Barbie Movie By RANI ANJANI ABSTRACT Utterances in a conversation will be interesting to analyze, especially in terms of violating maxims. Speakers use quite a lot of certain utterances that contain implicit meaning. This research aimed to analyze the types of maxims are violated in the “Barbie” movie and to analyze the meaning of maxim violated in the “Barbie” movie. This research was the type of qualitative research. The method of research was descriptive qualitative. The researcher used theory analyzing types of maxim from Grice 1989. The researcher used Barbie movie as an instrument of research. In analyzing the data of research, the researcher used theory from Miles and Huberman that there were three steps namely data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing. The data collections were; Downloaded Barbie movie from YouTube, downloaded the script of Barbie movie in order to make easier to analyze the utterance, watched Barbie movie about five times before analyzing the utterance, read the script while watching Barbie movie, analyzed utterance in Barbie movie, classified maxim violation from Barbie movie, described types of maxim violation and making conclusion. Based on the finding of research, it was found that the types of maxim violation which violated in Barbie movie were six maxims quantity, four maxims quality, five maxims relation and five maxims manner. There were some meanings of utterances involved in Barbie Movie such as from quantity, quality, relevance and manner. In this case, the most utterance that found in Barbie Movie was maxim quantity. Therefore, the researcher suggested that in case of education, the students can also learn about the study of pragmatics, in which there are several types of studies, one of which is about maxims and maxim violations.
