Abstract

ABSTRACT The research adopts a semantic approach, utilizing McCarthy and O'Dell's framework to identify the types and functions of idiomatic expressions, as well as Leech's theory of meaning to categorize and interpret them. A particular focus is placed on how idioms are used in literary texts and their complexities in translation. Focusing on novels, this study will explore the specific ways in which idiomatic expressions are used and adapted in literary translations, highlighting the complexities involved in maintaining the essence of the original idioms while making them accessible to readers of the target language. The study underscores the importance of understanding idioms to fully grasp the novel's interconnected storylines and nuanced meanings. By analyzing the translation of idiomatic expressions from English to Indonesian, this study explores the challenges translators face in preserving meaning, cultural relevance, and the essence of the original idioms. It highlights the strategies used in literary translations to maintain the impact of idiomatic language on readers, providing insights into its significance in fiction and its effect on reader comprehension and enjoyment. The research employs descriptive qualitative analysis method to investigate the research question, using dialogue from The Midnight Library as the primary data. A textual analysis method was used to investigate the research questions, involving data condensation, display, and drawing conclusions. Investigator triangulation was also employed to enhance the validity of the data. A total of 90 idiomatic expressions were identified, categorized into six types based on McCarthy and O’Dell’s framework. The meanings of idiomatic expressions were analyzed using Leech's framework of meaning. Four types of meaning; conceptual, connotative, affective, and thematic were applicable to interpreting the idiomatic expressions. All six functions, that is; advising and warning, telling stories, responding to what people say, agreeing and disagreeing, expressing failure, and emphasizing adjectives were identified. The most frequent function was responding to what people say function which is used 49 times. Keywords: Idiomatic expressions, The Midnight Library Novel
